Incredible Countermark of Cleopatra!
Antioch, Seleucis & Pieria, struck c. 90-89 BC. Heavy bronze AE22 coin. Originally depicted laureate head of Zeus right / Zeus enthroned left with Nike and sceptre, ANTIOXEWN THS MHTROPOLEWN KAI AYTONOMOY. Struck with a crisp countermark depicting the head of Cleopatra during her reign (c. 51-29 BC), thereby claiming 'ownership' of it as legal tender in her Egypt. It was used to mark coins circulating in the Syro-Phoenician territories which were given to her by Mark Antony. 22 mm, 10.55 g. with beautiful olive-green patina. Cleopatra is one of the most famous ancient Egyptians known to those in the modern world. She ruled Egypt as its last true pharaoh during the period of Ptolemaic Egypt. Today her story and image live on with the release of a brilliant new silver round series from Elemetal Mint. This coin was minted during Antony and Cleopatra’s alliance. By pairing their faces on coinage, the rulers advertised their powerful partnership, which was so strong that Cleopatra’s profile is an exact copy of Antony’s portrait. Cleopatra’s image appears on the front of the coin, which identifies her as the more important of the two.
