Incredible Countermark of Cleopatra! Antioch, Seleucis & Pieria, struck c. 90-89 BC. Heavy bronze AE22 coin. Originally depicted laureate head of Zeus right / Zeus enthroned left with Nike and sceptre, ANTIOXEWN THS MHTROPOLEWN KAI AYTONOMOY. Struck with a crisp countermark depicting the head of Cleopatra during her reign (c. 51-29 BC), thereby claiming 'ownership' of it as legal tender in her Egypt. It was used to mark coins circulating in the Syro-Phoenician territories which were given to her by Mark Antony. 22 mm, 10.55 g. with beautiful olive-green patina.
